We bought a new house. We're actually downsizing from a single family home to a townhome. People think it's weird that a couple in their 30s are downsizing, but we're very happy with our decision. For one thing, it's a smaller mortgage, so when my writing takes off, it'll be easier for me to leave the cube. And another, it doesn't require the annoying maintenance our single did, such as mowing the grass. It still has lots of space. I have an office to write in and hubby will be using one of the spare bedrooms to paint in.

2. We're getting a new puppy. We're calling her Holly Jane. She was born 2 weeks ago and will be coming home in 4 weeks time. YAY!

3. I got a freelance writing gig. I'm writing ad copy for small businesses in a local newsletter. I have to interview the client about their business and then write it up. I completed my first one as a test last week. The editor loved it and I'll be given some more clients soon. I think it's gonna be fun and of course won't hurt the resume.

4.My screenplay is finished and I'm really thrilled with it. I feel it's the best script I've written so far. It's now time to market it.

I will be back with a new post soon.c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-72455097682121993022010-08-04T16:01:00.000-07:002010-08-04T16:05:10.464-07:00Great newsGreat News! The dog we rescued on our trip to Amherst has been adopted! :) I wish a long lifetime of happiness in her new forever home!

So, what else is new? I started sending my novel out today. And now the waiting game begins. I'm trying to restrain myself from obsessively checking my email for responses, but it's kinda impossible. I plan to jump into my next project tomorrow to keep busy.

I'll keep you posted on any developments. :)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-45254517308175641682010-07-25T15:13:00.000-07:002010-07-25T15:26:02.281-07:00Summer updateI haven't posted since January, which is pretty pathetic, but the good news is that it's been because I have been mega-busy writing.

I finally finished editing my middle grade(9-12) novel. It has now grown to 44K words and I am really happy with it. I just need to put the finishing touches on the synopsis and then will start querying agents and publishers. I hope to start this within the next 2 weeks.

I already sent out the text for a children's picture book to 6 publishers and am patiently waiting to hear back.

The screenplay I was working on last year is coming along. By August 1st I should have a solid first draft. I have 3 other screenplays at different stages - two are in the outline stage and 1 I am 20 pages into already. I also plan to write a 60K word YA novel which I am outlining right now. My plan is to have all of these finished by May and then shop them at the same time.

In other news, when my husband and I were in Nova Scotia, we rescued a dog that was just left on the side of country road by it's owners. Don't even get me started on how disturbing it is that someone would do that. Anyway, we kept her for 2 days and then brought her to a shelter that does not euthanize and will find her a home. Will made a video of her, which he posted on youtube, hoping that someone will see how adorable she is and want to adopt her.

The rest of our vacation was chaos free, but wonderful. We visited family and got some sun. I visited with my dear friend Crystal! She is the best!!!

Now it's back to work. UGGH!c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-90841474010428251502010-01-16T12:10:00.000-08:002010-01-16T12:15:49.520-08:00I am in looove!Hubby ordered me a surprise that just arrived last night. It was Dragon Speak software. You put on a head set, dictate into it and your words end up on the page. I set it up last night and used it in a Word Doc, a Final Draft Doc and my email. The accuracy was incredible and it averaged about 120 words a minute. Just think how easy my 1,000 words a day goal will be now. LOL. However, it can only write as fast as I come up with words to say - there is no software that can change that.

In other news, I met with the Dramaturg I have been working with on Sunday. She said my play was ready and helped me improve my synopsis and query letter. I plan to read through the play one last time for typos and will then start sending it out on Monday! Exciting times! :)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-23864916267278779422010-01-02T14:01:00.000-08:002010-01-02T14:15:07.842-08:00Writing update and new year goalsI hope that everyone had a fantastic holiday!

I have used most of my holiday time to write. I am very pleased to say that on December 28th I finished a rough draft of my novel for 9-12 year olds! The draft is 27,000 words. The completed novel will be about 32,000 words, but I skimped on a few sections so that I could get the full story down while it was still in my head. It is a complete story as is but the 5,000 words I plan to add will be a sub plot (which I have already touched on in the story) that will add richness to the story. I also have come up with an idea that leaves the book open to a sequel.

I will now go back and revise a chapter or 2 a week and plan to send it to publishers in June.

So, starting Monday I will put the other 90% of my energy into finishing my screenplay.

Now that my play is officially ready, I have been researching play companies that I can query. I have narrowed it down to 100 but may not send it to all of them. Most ask you to send a synopsis and 10 page sample first, so I really need to get my synopsis ready. I feel very confident that they will like my play if they actually read it, so I need the write up to intrigue them so they will read further. I plan to tackle that tomorrow.

I have to say queries, synopsis and researching companies are the boring side of writing, but they are vital if one is serious about becoming a writer. What good is the greatest piece of writing in the world if it no one ever sees it? Too bad these things take so much time.

Christmas was fantastic. I got the iphone I wanted and have been having a lot of fun with it! We ate fantastic Indian food for new years and we have watched quite a few movies!

Happy Holidays! :)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-64307280048922820462009-12-22T14:49:00.001-08:002009-12-22T14:51:41.825-08:00Almost thereI am at 21,000 words! Yahoo!

In other news, we still don't have our Christmas tree up yet. It is ridiculous, I know, but we have had so much going on lately.

Hubby bought my an i phone for Christmas and let me have it early, as you only have so long till it can be returned etc. All I can say is that I am in love.

I've been contemplating adding another doggie or a kitten to our family over the holidays. But then I think...what extra time do I have for it?

:)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-23180205019535601922009-12-11T18:10:00.000-08:002009-12-11T18:15:27.747-08:001/3 of the way thereWell I didn't write much this week, but the week before I did, so I am now up to 14, 247 words on my children's novel. I plan to have a draft of 32,000 pages by December 31st. I am a little over 1/3rd of the way there.

January 1st I will start rewrites of my screenplay which needs to be 100% done by May 1st as I am applying for a production grant.

I still have a lot of Christmas shopping to catch up on and I'm going to Florida for 2 weeks in February, which means 2 weeks of no writing. So in January my mantra must be WRITE, WRITE, WRITE.c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-50966790410633499012009-11-20T17:31:00.001-08:002009-11-20T17:33:00.883-08:00A cute pix of doggie and pals

Here's a cute picture of my doggie with her two stuffed friends....

c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-13198453131180166772009-11-20T17:12:00.000-08:002009-11-20T17:19:22.262-08:00The best made plansWell, I got off to a great start with **the plan** and then I came down with a horrible cold on Monday night and have been off of work all week. A.K.A. I didn't write for 3 whole days. Nothing like a good ole plan to say JINX. But I'm back at it again. I wrote a little over 1,000 words on the novel this afternoon and now I plan to spend an hour on one of the screenplays. I still feel that all and all I am on schedule.

I had a request for one of my short scripts and just sent it to the director. Will let you know what I hear back.

I cooked lamb for dinner tonight. Every time I cook lamb my dog cries and hides in the basement. We've never been able to figure out why. The dog food she eats everyday is lamb and rice flavored, so it can't be that she doesn't like lamb. She just doesn't like the smell of it cooking. Go figure.c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-11746877304238310372009-11-15T11:39:00.000-08:002009-11-15T11:54:49.710-08:00My planIt's been a busy few months. I finally finished the rewrites on my play based on the feedback I received at the play reading. I plan to send it out to some theatre companies in January. And my private practice spec made it to the top 10% of the Austin Teleplay Competition.

All in all good news, but I don't feel that I have been writing enough. It's mostly because I am too tired to be "creative," after a long work day, but I know that is no excuse. So I'm going to keep track of my progress on this blog. Hopefully it will act as a motivator.

I plan to complete the following 7 projects by the end of May 2009:

A novel for 9-12 year olds which will be approx. 40, 000 words
A comedy screenplay which will be approx. 110 pages
A teen comedy screenplay which will be approx. 100 pages
A picture book for kids and three short stories for kids/teens

I plan to write everyday, but will probably alternate projects to keep things interesting. If I work on a book or short story I will aim for a minimum of 1000 words a day/ 6 days a week. If I am working on a script I will write a minimum of 5 pages a day/ 6 days a week. If I am working on an outline I will write a page a day (my outlines are usually 10 pages each but I do a lot of research which is what will take up the bulk of the time) / 6 days a week. Rewrites will follow the same word/page minimums. I really hope I will write more each day, but I want my goal to be realistic.

I am not including other research/query letters/ ideas and synopsis I write up.

This plan may look easy but don't forget it usually takes multipme drafts to get a script where I want it, so I will be going through this process over and over again.

This starts today, so I am off to write. :)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-81329869250278203682009-08-18T21:06:00.000-07:002009-08-18T21:16:21.047-07:00Tonight! Tonight! Tonight!I just got back from my play reading. It took place at a local director's house with professional actors and all I can say is that I am floating on a cloud right now. It was so great to see the play come to life!

Not only was it a LOT of fun, but everyone loved the play! They loved the characters! Compliments were falling like a torrential downpour.

And we had an hour to discuss it afterward, during which I received so much fantastic feedback to use for my next draft. My plan is to crank out the next draft in double time and have it ready to sell before Christmas.

As corny as it sounds, I left feeling like I was put on this earth to write and I can't begin to tell you how absolutely wonderful that feels!c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-32824254995522219272009-06-15T19:47:00.000-07:002009-06-15T20:00:21.692-07:00A bit of everythingOMG, I can't believe my last post was in March and I really can't think of a good reason for my laziness.

What's new?

I teamed up with a friend from film school. We created a few TV pitches together and sent them out to a producer last week. We've had interest in three and are pretty happy. They wanted more details so we're working on that right now. Working with someone else is great - keeps you motivated because you want to pull your weight and someone else is counting on you. It sucks because you have to agree on everything and that can be very very draining. It's a great learning experience and bottom line the world of T.V. and film is a collaborative one, so I might as well get used to it. Plus my writing partner ROCKS!

I finished my play and am having a play reading at the end of the summer which I am really looking forward to.

I am going to Chicago for a week in July. It'll be my first time and I am psyched. My must see list is so long I don't know how I'll cram it all into 6 days, but I shall try my best.

We got a free tree. The city offered each household one with free delivery. It is very scrawny and looks so lonely in our backyard, but it is ours and we adore it. Of course, so does the dog, who peed on it less than 5 minutes after we planted it. LOL.

I LOVED the prison break series finale and am awaiting the final break on DVD in July. Apparently it was on sky TV but I missed it! I bought seasons 1 and 2 on DVD and have devoured them in the last 3 weeks. Guess who I watched them with? My mom! Believe it or not she is a die hard fan. Hubby on the other hand hates the show which is weird considering it is more of a guy show. But Hubby hates the majority of today's T.V. shows, so don't take it personally prison break.

I'm sure there are a zillion other things I should be writing here....it's been three months...but it's not likely that I'll remember them so.... I'm heading to the fridge for a late night snack... I've been doing a lot of that lately.

Nite...c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-61434651523553813772009-03-21T08:22:00.001-07:002009-03-21T08:23:47.665-07:00update on scriptGreat news! I heard from that producer who was interestd in my script and she is still very interested! I am currently working on rewrites.

Nothing else to report at this time. :)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-46796676193410363312009-02-06T16:10:00.001-08:002009-02-06T16:21:27.481-08:00A mix of stuff - just like the weatherI heard back from the producer who read my script and she said that she loved it and would get back to me soon, so now the waiting game begins.

I also sent my resume and writing sample to the producer of a local TV show that is looking for new writers. Again, I just wait and see.

In the meantime, I have started a desperate housewives spec to add to my portfolio.

I came down with a crappy cold at the start of the week. Everyone at work was sick...I had a mild sore throat last week that passed and I was like, Yay, I didn't get it and then a few days later I wake up sick. SUCKY!

Every year at this time, Will and I start complaining about the cold, the snow, cold season and all the other crap that winter throws our way. We start talking about moving somewhere warm like California. We've also looked at Vancouver...although it rains there an awful lot. This year I seem more serious than ever, but I also love my job so who knows...c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-89732850775242017602009-01-19T12:56:00.000-08:002009-01-26T12:47:49.336-08:00Another firstSo, today I got a request for one of my scripts by an award winning director/producer. Now, before you think I'm all whiny, let me explain that I have been through many fire drills in previous buildings. None of them were like this. And this is the first time I've complained about a drill. Here's why:

You know how people often consider just hanging back and not leaving the building if they know it's not a real fire? Well this alarm was so loud people were running for the exit. I mean running. It also got louder and louder as we walked down the emergency stairs. People were covering their ears and wincing. That's how loud it was.

And if that wasn't bad enough. Guess how long it took me to get outside? In my old building I was on the tenth floor and got out within three minutes. Now, I'm on the 6th floor, so it stands to reason that it would be faster, right? Wrong.

It took twenty minutes!!!

The traffic in the stairwell was slower than molasses and people were joking that if there had been a real fire, most people would have been crispies before they got out.

So, probably not the slowest in history but maybe the most ridiculous.c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-78102946527913006552008-10-01T17:41:00.000-07:002008-10-01T17:48:19.643-07:00Boo RahWell, as you know, I was a semi-finalist in Page = Top 10. They announced the winner and second and third prize today and if I had been one of them, the title of this blog would have been woohoo or yay or something more creative and inspired, but all I could think of to describe my current state was ," Boo Rah."

I know I should be pleased I made it to the top 10, and as my husband says, that is an accomplishment in itself, but I can't help being bummed. As I sat at work today I fantasized about winning and what I'd do with the prize money...then came home and checked the results...boo hoo...anyway, this finalist thing may still help me sell the script.

And I was motivated to write. I just finished a one-pager for a kids show I'm gonna pitch to two children's networks. And I still have time to write a few scenes of my play before bed. Perseverance won the race, right?

The market recovered today... so there was some good news.c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-87702435381096575962008-09-26T09:37:00.000-07:002008-09-26T09:50:25.092-07:00No longer a hermitWell, I haven't updated in a while cause I've been tired and the reason is...

I am back at work. It hasn't been easy after being off for a year. And going back was a really hard decision. I told myself I wouldn't set foot in a cubicle again, but it was just too risky at this point. After all, outside of the world of fiction, we do need to pay the bills.

But I do feel grateful to have a good job. And they agreed to part time (3 days a week), so that I can have my Monday's and Friday's to work on my writing. Today I got up and went to a coffee shop and wrote all morning. Now I'm back home typing it all up...okay I'm procrastinating a wee bit with this blog, but only a wee bit.

The hardest things about being back at work are:

1. Getting up early. I think I forgot how to do that.
2. Functioning all day after getting up so early. I am a caffeine free person -- its just never agreed with me, but man it's hard to avoid coffee, tea and chocolate when you are trying to not fall asleep at your desk.
3. Office politics. No explanation required.

The upside:

1. Millions of screenplay ideas after only 3 days back. This far outweighs the 3 cons above.
2. No longer leading a hermit type existence. Is this a pro or a con? You decide.

I actually feel really positive. I've received great feedback on my writing and now plan to write like mad for a year. Next year I pound the pavement. :)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-59597137193059084252008-09-01T15:59:00.000-07:002008-09-01T16:07:42.234-07:00Mini-golf, ec-homes and pieWhat I did this weekend....

My dad flew up for a visit. Yesterday, even though it was a beautiful sunny day we decided to go play indoor mini-golf. I'd never gone before. It's very very dark and it's much harder than regular mini-golf because you can't see the gradations of the green. Even a hill appears flat in the dark.

Dad and Will both played well. I on the other hand played a very bad game. I pretty much whined the whole time and stopped trying near the end. Watching the three of us together is hilarious because we are all so competitive.

In the afternoon went to look at an eco-home that is being built near us. It's completely solar powered. In fact, you generate more eclectric than you use and can sell it back to the city. Isn't that cool? It would be great not to have an energy bill and even greater for the environment.

The previous day we took dad to Perth and this time I didn't mix up the directions. oh yeah, and Will got another pie. Gotta have pie.c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-14830777883755734992008-09-01T15:54:00.000-07:002008-09-01T15:55:29.563-07:00I'm a finalist! The Page finalists were just announced and I made it!!!!

http://www.internationalscreenwritingawards.com/2008-final.shtml

:)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-85807232937880046812008-08-31T18:57:00.000-07:002008-08-31T19:08:22.063-07:00My blonde momentSo, I had gone to both Merickville and Perth with my mom when she was on vacation a few weeks ago. They are both about 100 miles from home and make perfect day trips. I memorized the directions.

I thought Will would love Merickville as the town is full of artists and paintings which he adores so we decided to take a trip there yesterday.

He drove. I navigated from memory --no map. Part way there we turned onto Perth street as per my perfect memory and I said,"Isn't it weird that Perth street goes to Merickville and not Perth." And I truly believed that Perth street took us to Merickville. An hour later we arrived in Perth and I felt pretty stupid for mixing up the directions. Of course, Perth street should have been a dead give away that we were on our way to Perth. What a blonde moment.

Anyway, Perth was a blast. They had this awesome bakery and Will bought a pie -- Pie always makes him happy. Plus we found a great art shop and spent time basking in the sun by the water. We also bought some organic doggie treats for Huanne -- made by hand. She loooooves them!c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-79771319862798262942008-08-12T06:51:00.001-07:002008-08-12T06:52:13.885-07:00Page semi-finalsJust made it to the next stage of the Page screenwriting awards -- The Semi-Finals. Here's the link where you can see my name:

http://www.internationalscreenwritingawards.com/2008-semi.shtml

:)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-81851674030778688672008-07-14T16:43:00.001-07:002008-07-14T16:49:42.225-07:00More Contest NewsJust found out that both my feature script and one of my short scripts made the 1st round of the PAGE screenwriting awards. I am really surprised, but very very glad!

And this blog is really the only place that I can brag so: Brag, brag, brag.

In other news, our weekend was very very depressing. We have been considering selling our home, and downsizing to something way cheaper, so that I can focus on my writing, but the places we viewed were downright depressing. And each time we come home to our nice house and private backyard we like it more and more. So, I doubt we'll move. It's so hard to find that balance between giving your dream your all and trying to plan for the future esp. when you have no idea what's in store for that future. **SIGH**

And with that said, I'm off to start something new, my first Rom Com. :)c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-41094180608745282842008-07-11T07:58:00.000-07:002008-07-11T08:00:25.329-07:00GoogledMy dad called me last night to say he googled me and all of my writing contest wins came up. He got a big kick out of it. So of course, I tried to hide my enthusiasm, but I was on the portable phone, so as we continued to talk I walked over to the computer and typed in my name. I couldn't resist. It was pretty cool.c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3716645586066691792.post-34470095243540633902008-07-02T05:58:00.000-07:002008-07-02T06:05:16.773-07:00Firecrackers, dogs and other stuffLast night, the neighbourhood fireworks were at their craziest causing our dog (you may recall she has a real phobia) to go even crazier. She was panting, pacing and hiding in the basement.

I forced her into the backyard so she could face her fear. The vet had told us she needed exposure therapy, but she squealed so loud, it sounded like she was being slaughtered, so we had to bring her in. We then took her for a walk and actually showed her the fireworks. This did nothing to minimize the fear.

She's really no different than a person taking a panic attack. Your convinced your not safe and your going to die and no amount of reasoning will make you think otherwise. I hate to see my baby suffer so.

In brighter news, I found out this a.m. that I'm a quarter finalist in the Bluecat screenwriting competition. I was really surprised on this one and thrilled! Keep em coming!c-kathttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11792006098396377202noreply@blogger.com1
